Florida care briefings

Florida checks

Check who will assess your health

Ask for the person’s full name, profession and licence number. Use those details to find the state record.

Use Florida’s public licence search

Florida’s Department of Health has a free search for the licence of the person treating you. It also shows their background and public action against their licence.

Discipline means action a licensing body has taken against a professional.

The search covers doctors, physician assistants, nurses and pharmacists.

Match the full name and profession to the person who will see you. Read the status rather than stopping at a name match.

Which board is responsible?

Look at the letters after the doctor’s name. MD and DO name two kinds of medical degree. Both are doctors, but Florida uses a different board for each.

For an MD, use the Board of Medicine. For a DO, use the Board of Osteopathic Medicine. ‘Osteopathic’ is the name for the DO kind of doctor.

Nurses, including nurse practitioners, come under Florida’s Board of Nursing.

With advanced nursing training, a nurse practitioner can assess and treat patients as their authorised role allows.

Read what the record can tell you

When a public record is clear, it shows no public action. It does not give a score for the quality of care you will receive.

If the person seeing you online works in another state, check Florida’s online-care register as well as their home-state licence.

Ask the service to explain any mismatch in the details before deciding on a visit.
