Florida checks

Florida’s extra rule for weight care

A general online-care rule does not answer every prescribing question. Weight treatment has a separate Florida rule.

The first assessment matters

Florida’s medical-board rule for weight treatment requires a first assessment. It must include a physical check, a full health history and relevant tests.

The rule calls for referrals when needed. It also requires written informed consent in the record.

Informed consent means agreeing after the treatment has been explained.

The rule allows online care, but it still requires the physical check.

Ask how the physical check will be done. Ask whether any part of your first health check needs a visit in a room.

Care continues after the first visit

The Florida rule requires another assessment at least once every three months.

It covers medicines, substances made by chemical processes, food supplements and herbs used in medical care for weight loss.

A physician assistant or an advanced practice registered nurse may do the first health check under this rule.

A physician assistant holds a licence as a health professional. An advanced practice registered nurse has extra training; nurse practitioners are one kind.

Ask who will do that assessment and what follow-up is included in the bill.

Ask about the exact medicine and purpose

FDA is the US medicine review agency.

FDA-approved products include semaglutide under the names Ozempic and Wegovy, and tirzepatide under the names Mounjaro and Zepbound, with uses that differ by product.

An approval for one product or use does not describe every preparation offered under the ingredient’s name.

Ask which product is being discussed, why it is being considered and whether the product has FDA approval or comes from compounding.
